MHSS Baseball Wins Group 4 State Championship
BY TIM MORRIS
In this era of home run ball, the Middletown High School South baseball
team went small, as in small ball. Eagle Head Coach Chris LeMore described
the 2021 Eagles as a team that never let up, with hitters focused
on making contact and getting on base when they could.
“We put the ball in play and put pressure on you,” LeMore said. “We
21 outs. We were never out of a game.”
The Eagles took their hit and ran all the way to a state championship
this spring. South capped its extraordinary 2021 season with a 6-0 victory
Pitcher Ben Schild tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Ea-
and timely hitting (the Eagles had no extra base hits) to slowly peck away at
Montclair as the score kept increasing one run at a time. Before long, the
game was one-sided, small ball at it best.
Christopher Young went three for three and scored three times to pace
the offense. Patrick Eagone was two for three with two RBI, and Evan Wood
delivered two RBI. Pitching and defense played an important role as well
for the state champions. A lot goes into making a state championship team.

More reported that the Eagles had it.
“The kids are extremely dedicated to the uniform and the name on it,”

was Matt Pontari who threw a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits
for the Mustangs. The Eagles used their small-ball approach again. A single,

two solo home runs, but the hit he’ll remember most was his walk-off single
in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded that lifted South to the
4-3 win over Clearview. South rallied for two runs in the last of the sixth to
tie the game at 3 before Stanzione’s seventh inning heroics. Evan Wood
pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.
It was now onto Veteran’s Park in Mercer County for Montclair and the
success was a team effort from depth in the pitching rotation to timely hitting
throughout the line-up.
The 2021 Group 4 state championship team members were: Jack
Shea, Tom DeMarco, Joe Bartos, Stephen Boguszewski, Ben Cacoillo, Rob
Cangelosi, Will Christopher, Mike Cowell, Tom DeMarco, Will Doyle, Patrick
Eagone, Brevin Bezick, Louis D’Alessio, Danny Corcoran, Will Jagerburger,
Mike Keenan, Mike Mirro, Matt Pontari, Brendan Roche, Ben Schild, Joe
Stanzione, Ryan St. Clair, Jackson Stoll, Greg Trezza, Evan Wood, Peter Costanza
and Madden Stanley.
