Lincroft Boys All-Stars Claim District 19
Minors Division Championship
BY LES PIERCE
The Lincroft boys Minors (10 and 11 years old) baseball team went unde-
Sandy Hook squad and win by a 6-3 margin.
They added another run in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.
Lincroft’s Andrew Korth led off the bottom of the third with a screaming
the tally at 2-2 at the end of third.
had runners on base with one out, when relief pitcher Nate Dougherty came
out of the bullpen and took the mound.
Ironically, it was his defensive skills rather than his pitching ability that
Brendan Mannino then alertly gunned down the runner attempting to score
with catcher Roland Maghan getting the tag down low at the plate to complete
the inning ending double play. Although a disaster was averted, Sandy
Hook had once again gained the advantage, now by a 3-2 tally.
Ciaffaglione led off with a single followed by a double by Korth. RBIs by Murphy,
Peterson, Dougherty and Colton Fox racked up four runs.
Dougherty struck out two batters in the sixth as he shut out the visitors to
secure the win.
Anthony Muscarella got the nod as the starting pitcher. Liam DeStefano
came on in the third in relief, and Dougherty went one and two-thirds in the
closer role. The three hurlers shared eight strikeouts. Pitcher Murphy notched
a pair of wins in earlier tournament play.
Leading in batting over the tournament were Dougherty (.500), Luke
Hurley (.500), Korth (.500), Ciaffaglione (.428), Peterson (.428), Mannino
“These boys came together to play baseball on short notice and, after a
few practices, played like they’ve been playing together for a month,” stated
Manager Andy Dougherty. “I was proud of the way they handled themselves
and persevered to win the championship – never giving up and always picking
each other up.”
Coach Brian Hurley said, “We had a great group of boys that supported
each other and everyone contributed. They were a fun team to coach and
watch play.”
Coach Michael Mannino added, “In terms of nailing down the championship,
I would commend the Sandy Hook starting pitcher for going the full
Brendan and Roland to end the inning when they were threatening to go
ahead. Last was Nate coming up big and closing out the game.”
