New Items Now Accepted for Curbside Recycling

Holmdel Green Team member Vanessa Merhi and her daughter,
Eva, are tossing newly allowed items in their recycling bin
for curbside pick-up. Thanks to upgraded machinery now used
by Massa Recycling, the company that processes curbside recyclables
for all municipalities in Monmouth County, Holmdel can now recycle
many items that were not accepted for recycling in the past.
According to Massa spokesperson Brynn Mosello, Massa has
found markets in the U.S. for all the materials that Holmdel residents
can now recycle.
Allowed Curbside Recyclables
• No. 1 Plastics (leave caps on bottles)
• No. 2 Plastics (like the jugs detergent comes in) (neck size does
not matter)
• No. 5 Containers (such as margarine tubs, yogurt cups, baby wipe
containers, K-cup coffee pods)
• Clear plastic ‘clam shells’ (that blueberries, eggs etc. come in)
• Aluminum cans, tin cans, bi-metal cans
• Glass bottles or jars
• Non-hazardous aerosol cans
• Clean aluminum foil

• Cardboard shipping boxes
• Mixed paper (not shredded; receipts and pieces of paper over the

• Newspapers, including inserts
• Empty plastic toothpaste tubes
• Non-metallic wrapping paper
Non-acceptable Items
• Ceramics, dishware, glassware, light bulbs
• Plastic wrap, bubble wrap. Waxy or plasticized milk or juice cartons
• Plastic bags (can be taken to Kohl’s, Whole Foods or Acme).

• Batteries of any kind
• Electronic waste, such as cell phones (can be taken to Holmdel DPW
or Best Buy) Styrofoam (can be taken to the Middletown DPW or train

• Food of any kind (can be put in your backyard composter.)
• Food wrappers, used paper plates, napkins or paper towels
• Medical waste or needles
Keep recyclables clean and dry. Keep liquids out of the recycling
bin. Keep items loose, not in plastic bags. According to Green Team’s Bob
