7. One should dust off their bed.
Proof: The Prophet a said, “When any of you goes to
his bed, he should dust it with the inside of his garment”
(Bukhari).
8. One should apply kohl (antimony).
Proof: The
Prophet a would apply ithmid (antimony)
kohl before going to sleep (Shama’il Tirmizi).
9. Sleeping with the intention to be invigorated and thus
increase works that
bring about the pleasure of Allah.
Proof: Abu Musa g added, “Then we discussed the
night prayers and one of us said, ‘I pray and sleep, and
I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as
for my prayers’” (Bukhari).
10. One should make tauba (repentance) before going to
sleep.
Proof: The Prophet a said, “Whoever says, when he
goes to his bed: ‘I seek forgiveness from Allah, the
One whom there is none worthy of worship except for
Him, the Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him
three times’, Allah shall forgive him his sins even if
they were equivalent to the foam of the sea, or to the
number of leaves on the trees, or to the number of
compacted particles found in a pile of sand, or even if
they were equivalent to the number of the days of the
world”(Tirmizi).
11. One should sleep with the intention of waking up for
tahajjud prayer.
Proof: The Prophet a said, “Whoever goes to his bed
intending to get up and pray qiyam at night, then sleep
overwhelms him until morning, will have recorded
that which he intended and his sleep is a gift given to
him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime” (Nasa’i).
