
12. Recite du‘a before sleeping such
as:
O Allah, with Your name I die and I
live (Bukhari).
All praise is to Allah Who has provided
us with food and with drink,
sufficed us and gave us an abode, for
how many are there with no provision
and no home (Muslim).
13. Sleep with the right hand under
the cheek and recite the following
du‘a three times:
Proof: When the Messenger of Allah
a wanted to sleep, he put his right
hand under his cheek and would
then say three times: O Allah, guard
me from Your punishment on the
day when You raise up Your servants
(Tirmidhi).
14. Sleep on the right side.
Then, sleep on your right side
(Bukhari).
15. If one intends to sleep in the state
of janaba (ritual impurity) without
bathing at that time, he or she
should first make istinja and then
wudu.
Proof: ‘Ayesha j says that when
the Prophet a wanted to sleep
while in the state of major impurity,
he would wash his private
part and perform the wudu of
salat (Bukhari).
16. A person should not sleep lying
flat on their stomach.
Proof: Abu Hurayra g reports
that upon seeing a person lying
on his stomach, the Messenger of
Allah a said, “Allah does not like
this way of lying down” (Tirmidhi).
17. Do not sleep on the pathways or
amidst gatherings.
Proof: Jabir bin Abdullah k says
that the Prophet a prohibited for
a man to lie between the people
as in a gathering or on the pathway
(Majma‘u al-Zawa’id).
18. To take a qaylula (nap in the
afternoon)
Proof: Anas bin Malik g says that
the Prophet a said, “Take the qaylula
because shaytan does not” (Majma‘u
al-Zawa’id).
19. Two men or two women should
not sleep under the same blanket
or in the same bed.
Proof: Abu Sa‘eed Khudri g says
that the Prophet a said, “A man
should not look at the ‘aura of
another man; a woman should
not look at the ‘aura of another
woman; and, a man should
not enter into the same blanket
with another man and a woman
should not enter into the blanket
with another woman” (Tirmidhi).
20. If a person sleeps on an elevated
place such as a bunk bed, they
should ensure there is a barrier
that prevents them from falling
off the bed during the night.
Proof: The messenger of Allah a
said, “There is no redress for the
one who sleeps on a flat roof
without a railing/barrier” (Abu
Dawud).
