The 2019 50 Best Companies for Latinas to Work for in the United
States.
Publisher’s Message
So many of us had been expecting 2020 to be a banner year. We had just finished
a great LATINA Style 50 Conference in D.C. We were preparing ourselves for a year
of growth, new initiatives, and strengthening of programs. Instead today we find
ourselves sequestered and with so many uncertainties that we wonder how we will ever
pull through. Nothing compares though to the incredible courage and commitment of the
thousands who are on the front lines taking care of and protecting patients.
Our cover story highlights just a few of our sisters and brothers, Latina and Latino
nurses, doctors, and police officers who are facing every day for innumerable hours the
COVID-19 virus in many cases without all the protective gear that they need to stay “safe.”
The courage, commitment, and fortitude of these HEROES who not only take care of
patients but have to worry about their loved ones at home is indescribable. It is hard to
conceive that we, the United States of America, the greatest country on the planet could
have been so unprepared to face this challenge. How can this be? How could our
priorities have been so distorted that we have not been able to put this horror already
behind us? As we continue to struggle forward we hope that soon we are given better news
and that the pandemic is truly under control. In the meantime please observe all the
precautions that have been outlined by our health leaders.
For all the minority-owned businesses the struggle will continue. The funding
programs that were put in place by the Small Business Administration to help small
businesses stay afloat were exhausted within hours of opening up for applications and were
abused by large companies who took advantage of loopholes. We hope that the second
round of funding will be allocated in a more equitable way and the companies who truly
need the funds to survive will be recipients of the help.
To all our readers who have experienced the loss of relatives or family, we extend our
sincerest condolences. Thank you to all the Latina contributor Heroes to our main story.
We pray for your safety and good health. Paulette Rangel, ICU, Phoenix, AZ; Serena
