The Bakehouse Story
by Rebekah Sykes
The earth lies in dark stillness as the baker
makes his way to the bakery to start the ovens.
His hands work the starter adding ingredients
the years have memorized from the beloved
family recipes. As the sun rises, so too the
bread as it bakes a golden smile and fills the
neighborhood with the smell of freshly-baked
bread. Sunshine now warms the storefront. The
baker loads his baskets with breads, pastries,
pretzels and soon welcomes customers seeking
the goodness of generations. From Friedrich to
Josef, Kurt, and Martin Brunner the family of
bakers continues to rise.
Home with Aberdeen
Exterminating

Fishing from Aberdeen Lake, walking to
Aberdeen School, and crawling under houses
looking for pests are memories that Mr. Art
Parker holds dear. Born at Saint Joseph of the
Pines in 1952, James Arthur Parker, Jr, was born
and raised in Moore County. School days were
happy days shared with friends and outdoor
adventure. From the Aberdeen School to
Sandhills Community College, Art earned an
Associates degree in business and began work
at the chemical plant on Highway #5. Working
with the chemicals and pesticides laid the
foundation for a lifetime of service as owner of
Aberdeen Exterminating now serving homes all
over Moore.
The year was 1960, when Aberdeen
Exterminating became established by James
Arthur Parker, Sr, whom everyone called Red. A
one-truck operation for years, a red Ford, began
the tradition still carried on some 58 years later.
Art shares, “Whenever Dad was able to afford a
new truck, it was always red.” The red uniforms
and red trucks seen all over our community
honor the legacy established with Red, now
flourishing under the leadership of Art, and
continuing three generations strong with Alan.
With almost 60 years of service, Aberdeen
Exterminating digs deep to offer solutions to
homeowners’ pest problems.
For all his life, Art has worked. Throughout
high school, he drove his truck around to
service calls. When his father Red passed

Senior Ms. America
Takes the Stage
by Rebekah Sykes
The year was 1972, when Dr. Al Mott founder
of Senior Ms. America, Inc hosted the very first
pageant in New Jersey. From a career in social
work to answering the phone at a Senior Center,
Dr. Mott soon realized that ladies over 60, in
their Age of Elegance, were not ready to settle
down in rocking chairs. Rather, they wanted to
do more! Over the years, the pageant has grown
along with Mott’s vision to include all 50 states
and continue onto the international stage.
Space
by Jim Murray, Moore County Real Estate Brokers
Space, the sky that we look up at regularly,
sometimes to see how much daylight, or
darkness, or weather is there. We may have a
little itch going on what satellites are doing and
of course the moon. Rarely do we think about
what is beyond even the moon. It is a bit hard
to wrap a brain around the concept of space as
there is no end, and we can see things that are
light years away. Think about what is light years
beyond that?
Many have forgotten that we, the United
States have sent men to that moon and brought
them back. John F. Kennedy made a bold
