personal money for a hopeful gain. By nature
waste is reduced, free thinking ideas are
rewarded. Space X has reduced the cost by
almost half with its re-usable boosters, those
tubes coming back to earth and gently letting
themselves down on the pad. Ready for refueling
and another trip. Prior launches around the
world saw a lot of expensive stuff crashing into
the ocean or the Steepes of Russia.
Blue Orion has big plans as well; they just
completed a large, as in very large, building in
less than a year. It will be the only facility on
the planet where rocket parts go in one end and
ready-to-fly rockets go out the other end ready
for the launch pad.
As the head engineer from Blue Orion stated,
“Where else in the world could I work and
have a question and have access to all of these
talented people, not just in our company but
everyone else working on the Cape?” Looking at
a company picture of the young folks working
at Blue Orion, I saw no faces that looked much
older than 40! What a great place for young
talent to work.
Our final dinner was a private, catered affair
in the museum under the shuttle Atlantis, first
class all the way!
If you haven’t been there in a while, it is
worth the trip. If you have never been there, GO.
I could write reams about the day and a half that
we were there, but you really need to experience
it yourself.

FROM AUSTRIA con't from p. 8
30 years old upon purchasing The Bakehouse
building, Martin acknowledges, “How thankful
I am for seeing my parents’ struggles because
I’ve learned so much from them! When you’re
a teenager, you think your parents don’t know
anything. When you get older, all of a sudden
your parents get smarter and smarter. I’m
grateful for everything my parents and motherin
law have taught me.”
In teaching the next generation, Martin
encourages, “Learn as much as you can from
other people; take it slow; don’t rush into it.
Again, make tomorrow better than today;
whatever you do tomorrow has to be better than
today. Never stay content. Know your roots. Be
successful in learning from others and earn
an honest living doing the best you can. Never
settle for mediocrity.”
From Austria to Aberdeen, the heritage of
bakers continues to serve the bread of life to
all who enter. As guests share a visit with The
Bakehouse family, they savor the goodness of
generations.
Martin Brunner Favorites:
Favorite Ingredient? Chocolate. I use a French
brand called Calibo from Belgium.
Cooking tool? My hands as I love to shape
bread. But commercial product would be the
Spoonula, a rubber spatula shaped like a spoon.
Food? Ganache. And a good sourdough bread.
How do you enjoy your bread? With freshlybaked
bread, there is nothing that needs to go
with it. But when I’m eating breakfast at home,
I enjoy my bread with unsalted butter and some
kind of preserve maybe a raspberry, seedless
blackberry, or apricot.
Favorite meal? I’m big into breakfast omelets
or scrambled eggs. I love to cook pizzas; a pizza
stone makes a huge difference.
Favorite dessert? Anything chocolate. Right
now it’s the peanut butter mousse.
Baking tips? With cooking, you have the
freedom to make adjustments. However with
baking, you need to follow a great recipe.
If you had a free day, what would you do?
I enjoy visiting other bakeries as people come
together over food. I enjoy seeing how other
bakeries operate and what specialties they
offer.

statement that we would send men to the moon
and bring them back in a decade, that was 1961,
the Russians were way ahead. In 1969, we landed
on the moon and came home.
The Apollo program launches, 1-17, over
a generation ago! It hasn’t been done since.
Of course, we have had the Shuttle going up
and down and around, almost like sunrise and
sunset notwithstanding the one mishap of
Challenger. Remarkable when you think of all
the things that could have and should have gone
wrong, but didn’t.
The Space Station, began by the Russians, is
now a joint effort of both countries and several
more. Great innovation, but to keep it supplied
and staffed, the Russians have the only rockets
powerful enough to do the job. IF you need a
heavy load to go into orbit, you call Moscow!
To quote a cliché, “There may be a new sheriff
in town!” I had an enlightening experience
visiting the Space Center in January. Our group
of private pilots were treated to a VIP tour,
beginning with approval to land our private
planes on the Shuttle Runway. Most of us are
used to 2,500-5,000 ft runways, 15,000 is a lot of feet!
We were met and welcomed by Apollo
Astronaut, Al Worden. And as is the usual for
pilots flying in small airplanes, restrooms were
mandatory. No overnight facilities so we had a
short hop over to Space Coast Regional to park
the planes and a bus ride to the hotel.
The evening began with presentations by the
movers and shakers of the new effort to conquer
space travel: Space X, Blue Orion, Boeing, and
the Space Center. I am here to tell you that they
are going to do some great things! You may have
noticed the media did cover the Space X launch
and the Tesla going to Mars. What they didn’t
tell you about is there is a whole new group of
engineers and technical people who are going
to put us back on the leading edge of space
exploration.
They are young, excited, and not hobbled by
government bureaucracy as this collaboration
is all being done by private enterprise! Up until
now, all space exploration has been the exclusive
realm of government programs, worldwide. And
as all things government, it is getting a bit pricey;
monopoly rewards excess and waste.
Capitalism has the opposite effect, risk
