adept in the art of decoying tactics. At the
Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse led his warriors in
attacking Custer’s men from the north and west
in the annihilation of the 7th Cavalry Regiment.
The following year, Crazy Horse was killed while
resisting military arrest.
BUFFALO BILL & ANNE OAKLEY, continued
Buffalo Bill Cody founded his namesake town
in Wyoming in 1896. It continues as the home for
the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, a collection
of five acclaimed museums led by the Buffalo
Bill Museum. We spent most of our time there.
Two museum displays prove the scope of his
worldwide reputation: (1) the publicity banners
for Queen Victoria’s command performances
of his Wild West show for her Golden Jubilee in
1887 and (2) two US maps with colored push
pins identifying cities where his show had
performed. The flood of pins is amazing! If
you really want to be amazed, Google this URL
for Buffalo Bill Museum’s compilation of his
worldwide performances: www.buffalobill.org/
pdfs/buffalo_bill_visits.pdf.
The other star of the Wild West show was the
sharpshooter Anne Oakley, who has personal
linkage to Pinehurst. From 1916-1922 she
operated the gun club at the Carolina Hotel/
Pinehurst Resort. “She instructed about 125,000
men and women in the art of marksmanship.”
UNKNOWN HISTORY REVEALED: MORMON
WESTERN MIGRATION
Early in our tour, I was surprised by the
frequent references to the Mormon Western
Migration in the mid-1800’s. Brigham Young
led the first Mormons into present-day Utah
in 1847, at the outset of our national Manifest
Destiny migrations westward and right after
the Donner party catastrophe of 1846. There
apparently were some spurious stories implying
linkage between the Donner Party and the
Mormon Church. There was a large Mormon
family in the Donner Party, but there was no
direct connection to the Mormon Church.
I remember that the Donner Party was
studied in the public school curriculum
during the 1940’s. But there was no concurrent
mention of the much larger and more
consequential Mormon migration that carried
tens of thousands of Mormon immigrants to
the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. This Mormon
Trail generally followed pre-existing routes to
traverse the 1,300 miles from Nauvoo, Illinois,
to Salt Lake City. The Mormons, however, were
a unique element in this migration process
because they were basically responding to their
violent expulsion from Missouri and Illinois for
religious reasons. They were also motivated by
a desire to maintain their religious and cultural
identity by settling in an isolated area where
they could permanently settle and practice
their religion in peace. The disparity with which
history treats the calamity of the Donner Party
vis-a-vis the results of the Mormon Migration
seems to be a curious contrast. A contrast that
was accentuated by what we experienced in
Salt Lake City. Salt Lake’s splendor, to the verge
of reverence, was overwhelming. Our visit was
capped by attending the Sunday morning
rehearsal for the weekly Music and the Spoken
Word TV concert by the Mormon Tabernacle
Choir and the Temple Square Orchestra…a
magnificent venue, superb acoustics and worldclass
choir and orchestra.
So I end on this historical contrast that I
hope you will consider an interesting historical
anomaly to consider.
