Happy 470th Birthday!
Nestled in the Longleaf Pine preserve on the
Boyd Tract of Weymouth grows the oldest known
living Longleaf pine! 470 years old to be exact! Our
community will celebrate our treasured pine with
“Party for the Pine” on April 21st. Come and take a
hike with a park ranger and fellow locals to see the
tree, whose age was discovered by accident, but
documented for all to enjoy. After the hike, go ahead
and spend the day in the Weymouth meadow with
the food trucks, face painting, & all kinds of FUN!
Giraffes
The giraffe’s scientific name is Giraffa
camelopardalis. A giraffe has a very long neck and
legs. Giraffes live in the savannahs and woodlands
of Africa. They eat leaves, fruits, and flowers. They
are prey to lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, and
African wild dogs. Male giraffes use their necks
to fight for females. They are listed as vulnerable.
There are 1,144 that have been captured. A fun fact
about giraffes is that many of them have been put
in paintings, books, and cartoons because of their
unusually patterned coat. The word “giraffe” comes
from the Arabic word “Zarafah.” It means fast walker.
The end.
