A Time of Celebrating.
Leave everything behind and
arrive at a place like nowhere
else. Anguilla,
British Caribbean,
West Indies!
Anguilla celebrated 50 years as an independent
last year self-Governing,
overseas territory of Great Britain.
Some 37 years ago that the Anguilla
Act of 1980 set in motion the wheels
that would officially end any association
with the Tri-State of St. Kitts, Nevis and
Anguilla. What came to be known as
Separation Day officially for Anguilla.
May 30th, 1967, the people of Anguilla began
a revolution, marching on the Police Headquarters
and evicting the St. Kitts police and
disassociated the island from The Federation of
Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Tucked away in the Eastern Caribbean, Anguilla
is the most northern island in the Leeward
Island chain, less than ten miles north of St.
Martin and 200 miles east of Puerto Rico. Off
the beaten path for much of recent history,
the island now possesses an airport capable of
landing smaller jet passenger liners. Most island
visitors arrive via the short ferry boat service
from St Martin. The St Martin International
Airport offers direct flights from the US and
European continent making the region accessible
from practically anywhere. Anguillans are
protective of the tranquil culture inherent to
the island, so if it’s the night life your searching
for, perhaps St. Martin would be better choice.
Anguilla’s character is perhaps somewhat
exclusive, appealing to those of us seeking five
(5) star accommodations, beautiful coral sand
beaches and the option of privacy.
Approximately 16 miles East End to West End
and 3 miles at its widest point, Anguilla is predominantly
low-lying. It is comprised of coral
/ limestone and covered mostly with rock,
sparse scrub oak, a few trees and saltwater
ponds. One main road runs through the center
of the island, making Anguilla easy to travel by
car in less than a half an hour.
My first visit to Anguilla was 22 years ago where my husband and I exchanged our wedding
vows on the beach at the Frangipani Beach Resort, on Meads Bay. Well, 22 years
later we decided it’s been too long- the island was calling us. We feared that things
may have changed from the unparalleled white sand beaches surrounded by stunning
turquoise waters and the contagious happiness on the island that we remember. Surely
it must be overcrowded, taking away that tranquility and spirit we experienced during
our honeymoon, but we decided to re-visit this paradise and see how it had evolved.
Onward to planning of the trip to celebrate our 22 years of marriage. The Frangipani
was a must, hoping it would still hold the same elegances, privacy, and tranquility. The
Frangipani Beach Resort is family owned and operated, and has set itself apart as the
premier luxury boutique resort in Anguilla. The moment we arrived we knew it was going
to be the same or even better. Being personally greeted by the Managers/Owners son
and daughter in law, Scott and Shannon Kircher, they were so excited to meet us and
talk about our experiences from 22 years ago. We visited with the concierge’s Candice
and Shanesha to set up some plans for activities, dinner, and of course a car.
