The passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush has been a sad occasion
for many of us. The response to her demise from all over the world
has been deeply moving. The statement from President George
Walker Bush, “I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in
the world, and in fact I used to tease her that I had a complex about that
fact. But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed
at The Enforcer is lifting us all up. We have faith she is in heaven, and we
know life will go on — as she would have it. So cross the Bushes off your
worry list.” I think this statement reflects the sentiments of our country
and all of us who had the honor to meet her. Her commitment to literacy,
to our children has been second to none. She definitely set a standard for
all First Ladies to follow. Her legacy will live on long after her passing. I
would like to express our deepest condolences to the Bush family and I will
follow the President’s request: I am crossing the Bushes off my worry list.
In this issue of LATINA Style, we profile an exemplary group of Latinas
who have made their mark in the STEM field. All of them had their lives
touched by someone who opened their eyes to the possibilities and to
new universes that they had never imagined. That is the impact that one
person can make in a young mind. Their stories will inspire you and
hopefully make you inspire others.
Twenty years ago, we launched the LATINA Style 50 program, the
signature program of LATINA Style. Researching companies to make
sure Latinas knew which corporations are providing them with the best
opportunities for success has been one of our premier responsibilities. In
this issue we cover the LATINA Style 50 and Diversity Leaders Conference.
It was wonderful to see and learn from the most accomplished Latinas in
corporate America. We recognized Prudential Financial, Inc. as our Company
of the Year, our LATINA Style Latina Executive of the Year, Ms. Tony
Gutierrez from American Airlines and Crecer, the Hispanic Employee
Resource Group of the Year from United Parcels Service (UPS).
So much has changed in our country in the past 20 years that many of
the companies originally recognized in 1998 are no longer around. Others
have created amazing programs to ensure their employee success. Diversity
and inclusion were not part of our lingo back then, but today they are
essential components of corporate culture. We congratulate all of them,
the companies, the ERGs and the Latina executives that are leading the
way. Maybe your company can join us this year. Surveys for the 2018
LATINA Style 50 are being distributed as we speak and you can access
them on our website as well at http://latina50.latinastyle.com/2018-survey/.
