Unscheduled Time
Allowing kids to participate in activities outside
of school provides time for your child to pursue
his interests in sports or the fine arts, but it is
all too easy to let your family’s busy calendar
become overfilled. You and your kids feel like you
are always on the go. As soon as you arrive home
in the evening from your child’s activity, you rush
to prepare dinner, get everything ready for the
next day, and by the time you are finished, it is
time to go to sleep. Then it all starts over again
the next day. During the weekend, you may find
little unscheduled time, with your child’s sports
activities, home maintenance tasks, and social
obligations keeping your family busy.
Having no down time to slow down and relax
can be stressful. Feeling stressed can harm
relationships between family members and
even impact the physical and mental well
being of your family. Kids need unstructured
time for free play. It allows them to exercise their
creativity, use their imagination, and learn to
entertain themselves. Schedule the unstructured
time on your calendar just like you would any
other commitment. You may need to limit the
number of activities your child participates in
to make room for this unscheduled time. Some
parents do this by allowing their child to choose
just one or two activities each season so that he
can experience a variety of activities without
being overscheduled. For example, your child
may play soccer in the fall, join a swim team
for the spring, and attend science camp in the
summer.
However, try to ban electronics during your
family’s unscheduled time. You don’t want them
taking the place of your child’s opportunity for
free play and getting in the way of spending
time bonding with your child. Instead, enjoy time
playing outside with your child or ask your child
to choose his favorite board games for a family
game night.
