Wise Choices for You & Your Family

STAYING
The first several weeks of school are over and, most likely,
you have received your child’s report card. With the holidays
approaching, it is easy for students to become distracted from
homework and projects. Here are a few tips to keep school
performance strong and improve in any areas where your
child may be struggling.
• At home, set up a homework area that is free from
distractions and make your expectations clear about your
child’s after school schedule. Unless your child needs to use
the computer to complete her assignment, the homework area
should be an ‘electronic-free’ zone.
HOO’s learning
• Teach your child to plan ahead for tests and homework
assignments. Teach your child the importance of planning and
distributing the workload by having her mark on a calendar
what needs to be completed each evening to prepare for the
test or assignment deadline. If your child receives assignments
daily that are due the next day, have her keep an agenda
of what is due the next day, even if you get a text or email
reminder from the teacher. Before you know it, she will be in
middle school and expected to manage this on her own.
• Don’t delay getting your child the extra help she needs if
she is struggling. Your child’s teacher and school counselor
can help you determine what may be causing your child to
underperform. If you feel your child may have a disability
that is interfering with her education, ask for an evaluation.
Advocating for your child can help determine if she has a
disability requiring an individualized education plan (IEP).
• If your child does not have a disability but just needs a little
extra help in certain classes, consider a tutoring program.
Tutors are trained to understand your child’s learning style and
create an environment and routine to help your child flourish.
Some great local resources include Kumon Math & Reading
Center, Mathnasium, and Sylvan Learning Center. To find out
