dismal. In the pre-war period, interception
rates of 30% to 50% were considered excellent.
Unfortunately, what that really meant was that
over half of the interceptor sorties launched
would fail to even see their enemy, so couldn’t
shoot anything down! It is for that reason that
in WWI, a favorite tactic was the Fighter Sweep
commanders, not knowing where the enemy
was, would dispatch fighters to “sweep specific
areas” in the hope of “running into” the enemy.
However, when using the Dowding System
in the Battle of Britain, average British intercept
rates were a magical 90%, and several raids
ATTAINED PERFECT 100% success rates.
Luftwaffe fighters often returned to base without
ever seeing them. And if they did gain contact, the
RAF fighters were invariably in the advantageous
battle position Many writers credit the outcome
of the BATTLE OF BRITAIN to the role of RADAR.
BUT FOR ME, IT IS INCONTROVERTIBLE THAT
THE DOWDING SYSTEM’S GENERATION OF
THE FORCE MULTIPLIER THAT INCREASED
INTERCEPTIONS, IMPROVING COMBAT
EFFECTIVENESS AND REWARDING BRITAIN
WITH THIS HUGE WIN IN THE BATTLE OF
BRITAIN!
Prime Minister Churchill understood that
well when he said:
“All the ascendancy of the Hurricanes and
Spitfires would have been fruitless but for this
system which had been devised and built before
the war. It had been shared and refined in
constant action, and all was now fused together
into a most elaborate instrument of war, the like
of which existed no where in world.”
No one can say it better than that, but,
nevertheless, I would like to close by thanking
MOM for the inspired job she did as a young
teenager in the tactical areas marked (WAAF).
Not only was she a quintessential ENGLISH
LADY in later life, as I would tell everyone while
we were sharing our lives together. But now I can
also add, in all honesty, that she was truly my
really courageous and unforgettable shipmate!

EPILOGUE
The End of Battle of Britain is not the end
of this story. Mom’s service in WAAF continued
through VE Day, defending against Luftwaffe’s
ongoing attacks, epitomized by THE BLITZ.
Meanwhile, the “MIGHTY EIGHTH” Air Force,
US Army Air Corps had joined the RAF in
strategic bombing of Germany. One of its
assigned air bases was RAF Rackheath, located
near Mom’s base in Norwich. She met 1st Lt J.
Eugene (Gene) Brooks, stationed at Rackheath
in a B-24 Heavy Bombardment Squadron, at
an American Independence Day celebration
in 1944 at Horning Pub near both their bases.
Quickly, wartime Camaraderie blossomed into a
Courtship, when, as a War Bride, Mom, flew on
the first post-war PAN AM CLIPPER flight from
London to New York, then continuing by train
to Dothan, AL to form a new Allied Alliance—a
Southern US-English family. And now they still
rest, as they lived, side by side in Barrancas
National Cemetery, Naval Air Station, Pensacola.
