Musings With Murray
Jim Murray, Owner and Broker in Charge
at Moore County Real Estate Brokers celebrates
47 years of selling real estate and 35 years with
MCREB. As we visit, Murray shares some insight
as Murray knows Moore!
Most important advice? Treat people as you
would like to be treated. That’s my bottom line.
Before making a real estate deal? Educate
yourself before you pull the trigger. You need
to know that there is no better value—value is
when there is none better.
Favorite childhood memory? Growing up in
Montana and being out in the hayfields in the
summertime! At six years old, I got to be with
the big people. Dad let me drive the jeep back
at lunchtime, and I was the king—even though I
couldn’t even see over the windshield.
Favorite Olympic memory? Walking into
the Olympics in Grenoble! Back then we didn’t
have big sound anywhere. But in the stadium at
MUSINGS WITH MURRAY continued
Grenoble, they had these huge speakers, and the
sound was deafening playing the Olympic tune.
That sticks with you!
Memory from Vietnam? After performing a
flying cover for a convoy, the plane lands, and
I grab my gear and find myself left in this great
big open area. About that time, 10 incoming
rockets start exploding because they’re trying to
hit airplanes as they take off. I’m standing in the
middle of nowhere with nowhere to hide while
I’m doing the hot foot across to the bunker. The
big thing is you’re out there, and the bad guys are
all around—that was the worst part of Vietnam.
Favorite place to fly? One of the nicest
places to fly with my plane is over to Triple Tree
in Woodruff, South Carolina. Started by a guy
named Hartness, Triple Tree is out in the middle
of nowhere with 7,000 feet by 400 feet wide of
the smoothest grass runway you ever saw. They
have the world’s largest RC, Radio Controlled,
get together in the country every summer along
with camping and a river with fishing. I also
enjoy going to Sun and Fun, and I enjoy going
to Oshkosh.
If you had it to do over again, what would
you change? I would have stayed in the Army
and gotten retirement. People say, “Well, that’s
dangerous.” Well, I’m flying; I’m driving; Life is
dangerous!
Your piece of property? Where the Lakeview
Dairy once operated, my property sits on 40
acres. Shared with three dogs, one cat, and a
horse, the land is alive with wild turkeys and
deer. Boo Boo the deer comes up in the yard
every night to eat corn, and there must be 50
turkeys out in the yard. I have seen a mountain
lion, and the bears, bobcats, and coyotes go
through. The house sits back off the road, and
it’s got an old building around 115 years old
which used to be a stage stop on the Greensboro
to Fayetteville Stage Road back in the day. Little
River runs through the land. I’ve found two or
three arrowheads back down by the river, one is
a perfect arrowhead; one is kind of a scraper.
If you had a free day to spend in Moore
County, what would you do? I’d go fishing or
flying. My hobbies are pretty simple. I like to
fish. I like to hunt. I like to target shoot, and I
do all my own reloading. I shoot into big blocks
of wood, and once the wood gets a little rotten,
I burn the wood to melt all the lead back down
which I reform into bullets and shoot again.
Favorite restaurant? I have three favorites.
Beef Eaters is good. I like Bell Tree, that’s probably
my favorite; their hamburgers are about as good
as any. However, I eat at Valentis the most—they
have the best pizza in Moore County!
Moore County is…Moore County is a great
place to live. It’s the friendliest, nicest place to
work and live that you could ever find!
Favorite author? Ivan Doig as he writes
about Montana, western type reading. Chasing

the Sun is a favorite historical novel about how
Franklin Roosevelt built the Fort Peck Dam with
the WPA,Works Progress Administration, 1930s.
Favorite place in Moore County? There’s
nothing better than walking up and down Broad
Street!
Favorite sport? Professional football.
Most beautiful place you’ve ever seen? Well,
one of the most beautiful places are the Alps in
Switzerland. Italy is probably one of the coolest
places in the world simply because of the
antiquity. When you see what they’ve built from
the B.C. times—if we tried to built such today,
then it’d take five years to get the permit, and it
wouldn’t last ten years.
Other local favorites? I enjoy the fine dining
and all the shows at Myrtle Beach. It’s Broadway
entertainment without having to go to Broadway
and put up with New York at a tenth of the price.
The Pik N Pig—any place that you have
people fly in from four different states just to
get the barbeque, it’s got to be something. On
a good weekend, they may have 52 airplanes
fly in, have a bit of barbeque, and take a plate
back to mama. Pik N Pig is one of the stops on
the Hundred Dollar Hamburger Circuit which
for pilots means that you spend $100 to go get a
hamburger just so you can go flying.
What about the Moore County airport? It’s
a booming little airport that could be a much
better airport. It’s a gem that could really help
the area because we have a lot of people who
want to live in Moore County, but they can’t
find a hangar for their airplane. You’ve got a guy
who’s got a half a million dollar airplane, and
he’s getting ready to retire. He’d love to play golf
and buy a half a million dollar house. When he
gets here, he’s going to pay taxes on the airplane,
his cars, his house, on the fuel and all the rest,
but there are no hangars. So he goes somewhere
else. Think about it.
Whenever you leave a visit with Murray, you
always have something to think about. For more
