CERVICAL HEALTH
AWARENESS MONTH Jan 2019
Nearly 13,000 women in the United States are
diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, but the
disease is preventable with vaccination and appropriate
Most people either love or hate the
bitter taste of coffee, but researchers
found that one set of compounds,
known as phenylindanes,
form during
the roasting process
and are responsible
for that flavor.
More than any other
compound, phenylindanes
inhibit both
amyloid beta and tau
under laboratory conditions.

adds that it’s likely to
be the combination
of compounds providing the biggest
benefits from drinking coffee, but the
outcome indicates that phenylindanes
(in decaf too for those that like the
flavor but not the caffeine!) could be
a key component to coffee’s positive
effects on the brain.

Since this study was conducted in a
lab, the next steps would be to evaluate
if the same results are found with
human subjects
once they ingest
coffee. Although
not conclusive, this
research is a starting
point to discover
more about how
these compounds
interact with the
proteins responsible
for diseases
that are affecting so
many.
It is important to note, as the research
indicates, coffee is not a cure for
these diseases but perhaps as more
studies come out, you will find even
more reasons why you should start
your day with a cup!

During January, the National Cervical Cancer Coalition
(NCCC) and its many local chapters across the
country highlight issues related to cervical cancer,
HPV disease and the importance of early detection.
While NCCC chapters host events throughout the
year, January is a month with a special focus as
chapters celebrate Cervical Health Awareness Month
and work to spread the word in their communities.
