HEAT
Hot Weather Emergencies
The ideal temperature
for humans is 77º
In Kentucky, summertime temperatures can get hotter
than 100º. Being in the extreme heat for even a short
time can make a person very sick. Here’s what to look
for so you can tell an adult if you or someone else is
having problems.
Heat Exhaustion
When it’s hot, you lose body fluids which can lead to heat exhaustion.
If you think someone has heat exhaustion, tell an adult right away.
People with heat exhaustion should move to a cool place, rest and sip water.
If they don’t feel better in a hour, call 9-1-1.
Heat Stroke
Heat stroke happens when you get too hot and your body can’t stay
cool on its own.
If you think someone has heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately.
People with heat stroke must be treated by a doctor or nurse.
Move the person to a cool area and follow the 9-1-1 operator’s instructions.
PEOPLE WITH HEAT EXHAUSTION MAY FEEL NAUSEOUS,
SWEAT, HAVE A HEADACHE, FEEL CONFUSED OR WEAK,
HAVE PALE SKIN AND MUSCLE CRAMPS.
PEOPLE WITH HEAT STROKE HAVE HOT, DRY, RED
SKIN, DO NOT SWEAT, WILL BE DIZZY, MAY SEEM
CONFUSED, MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DRINK FLUIDS.
