Whether they realize it or not, Henrico's seniors
have someone who's always working for
them.
She's Jelisa Turner, the county's advocate
for the aging, and she's a combination ambassador,
liaison, educator, networker and and
general source of information. Henrico officials
created Turner's position in 2015, and she's
been working for the county's aging population
ever since.
Her efforts – under the umbrella of a program
called EngAGE – involve educating the
community about the resources available to
Henrico's 55-and-older population and evaluating
what new resources are available or in
demand.
She connects seniors in need with help –
for example, she once connected volunteers
with a senior citizen who needed help spreading
gravel for her driveway – and gives presentations
to homeowners' associations.
She helps caregivers learn about options
for their loved ones. She organizes annual
events – such as Senior Law Day, which provides
free legal documents for county residents
55 and older; an annual volunteer event,
which helps let seniors know about volunteer
opportunities locally; and a
senior safety event, which
provides helpful tips.
She helps seniors understand
the county's Real
Estate Advantage Program,
which offers tax breaks for
seniors and disabled citizens.
Various county agencies offer a plethora of
services geared to seniors, but before Turner's
arrival, there was no easy way for seniors to
learn about them all. Now, there is.
Reach Turner at (804) 501-5065,
jelisa.turner@henrico.us; or visit the engAGE
website at henrico.us/services/seniors.
