Going Over
The Edge!
WORDS: Jessica Schubick Back in February, Suncoast Youth for
Christ (YFC) brought their mission of
reaching young people everywhere
with the hope of Christ “to new heights”
with a thrilling event in our community. The
organization recruited 58 supporters to
rappel from the roof of the Hyatt Regency
Sarasota to raise funds and awareness for
their youth outreach programs.
Additionally, six local celebrity rappelers –
including Manatee High School Principal
David Underhill, Captain Lorenzo Waiters
of the Palmetto Police Department, and
Sarasota City Commissioner Shelli Freeland
Eddie – participated in a VIP media event
on Friday, February 22nd to help spread the
word about the effort.
Captain Waiters said: “I am participating in
Over the Edge because I want to give back
to the community. The Palmetto Police
Department wants to show everyone how
much we value them and that we are willing
to go the extra mile – or 12 stories.”
Partnering on this exciting fundraising
opportunity with Over The Edge Global
for the second year, Suncoast YFC raised
more than $72,000 to further their work
reaching lost and hurting young kids. YFC
leadership is particularly grateful to their
“Rope Sponsor,” United Electric. United
Electric has been long-term supporter of
they sponsored eight of their employees to
rappel on behalf of their company.
Individual participants in the event were
required to raise a minimum of $1000 for
Suncoast YFC in order to secure their
rappelling position. The Hyatt Regency
Sarasota, one of the premier luxury hotels
on the Suncoast, generously donated the
use of their 12-story building to make the
Captain Lorenzo Waiters of the Palmetto Police Department
Manatee High School Principal David Underhill event possible.
