NOCTURNES
Jan Pieter Fokkens
March 19-April 17
Reception: Thursday, March 19, Noon-2 p.m.
Artist Talk: 12:30 p.m.
Frederic Chopin published 18 nocturnes during
his lifetime. It’s fascinating that the birth of this
musical genre closely coincided with the earliest
astrophotography. By increasing exposure times
on photographic plates, stars and nebulae invisible
to the human eye could be recorded for the first
time, opening up complete new ways of understanding
and looking at reality. The artist’s series of
paintings explore the relationship between early
astrophotography and the Nocturnes by Chopin.
The gallery exhibition will continue into the atrium.
