United States Air Force
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired)
George Robert Partridge
from Doraville, Georgia was inducted
into the 2018 Class of the Georgia
Military Veterans’ Hall of Fame for his
heroism in connection with military
operations against armed enemies
of the United States while serving
in Vietnam. After attending North
Georgia College, he enlisted in 1952,
was later commissioned, completed
pilot training, and eventually retired in
1984 having served a total of over 32
active duty years.
On November 12, 1965, in Vietnam,
then Captain Partridge was serving
as a Forward Air Controller on the
ground with an element of the 1st
Infantry Division when the unit was
attacked by an overwhelming enemy
force which threatened to penetrate and overrun the American
defensive perimeter. During the early phase of the attack, Captain
Partridge was wounded. Disregarding his injury and leaving a
relatively safe position, he continually exposed himself to deadly
the best vantage point to observe the
enemy’s location and then to effectively
coordinate and direct lifesaving tactical
air support. Because of his devotion
to duty, disregard for his own safety,
and total focus on the protection of his
fellow Soldiers and Airmen, his effective
skill enabled U.S. forces to gain the
advantage, turn the tide of this battle,
and save an untold number of American
lives.
Later that month on November
observation aircraft, he was again
credited with saving the lives of many
Americans who were caught in a deadly
vehicle convoy ambush. Again, with
total disregard for his own safety, he
dove his plane directly at the enemy
ambush, causing them to divert their
vehicles on the ground until helicopter
Lieutenant Colonel Partridge’s combat awards are: Purple
Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and our nation’s third highest
