Although considered stark and
even hostile Brutalist art was also
revered for imparting an edgy, yet
elegant vibe to otherwise stark
interiors. Design trends of the 70’s
has also been brought to the
attention of Contemporary interior
designers due to its widespread
appeal by the movie and television
industries. The television series
entitled "Mad Men" and the movie
"American Hustle" gave credence
to the trend of "Brutalist Chic" by
using examples of the furnishings
and sculptures in their set designs.
A resurgence for Brutalist
furnishings and sculptures is
exemplified in the highly
individualistic creations by
designer Paul Evans (1931-1987).
A wall mounted sculpture created
from hand crafted metals with
scorched, acid treatments and
mirrors overlaid with welded iron
rods is an example of the Evans
style. Some of the most captivating
Brutalist sculptures are by
unknown or emerging sculptors.
A wall mounted sculpture from
oversized, blackened masonry
nails creates a grid pattern which
is further overlaid with torch-cut,
curled copper leaves and a parade
of roughly sculpted flamingoes.
