Gainesville and Florida Southern
College, in Lakeland house Florida
citrus label collections. Jerry
Chicone Jr. assembled the Florida
collection.
Chicone is an advocate for Florida
citrus producers. He was a board
member of Florida Citrus Mutual,
the Growers Advisory Committee,
the Umatilla Citrus Growers Board
and Florida’s Natural Growers’
Cooperative. He became a member
of Florida Citrus Hall of Fame in
2009.
The Citrus Crate Label Collection
at Florida Southern College
contains digitized labels from
the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame,
private collector James Ellis.
These colorful labels are both
artistic and useful as a reference
in the citrus industry.
The University of Florida, PK
Yonge Library of Florida History
is seeking individuals or families
who worked in the fields and
packing plants for Florida citrus.
It seeks to expand on the history
of citrus growers and their labels.
Jim Cusick is the curator.
There is a strong demand for
Florida Citrus label artwork. They
are timeless pieces of a unique
art style. It portrays a time in
American history and serves as a
remembrance of the workers who
picked and packed Florida citrus
fruits during the first half of the
20th century.
