amazing, adds movement and brings nature to
your back yard. Imagine a water feature.
If you are someone who loves plants, fish,
birds, frogs and the sound of falling water, then
a water garden is for you! Water gardens are
designed and built to accommodate aquatic
plants and goldfish. Water gardens are typically
under 250 sq. ft. and include a waterfall. They
are less than 30 inches deep and have a relatively
simple filtration system. Water gardens are the
most common type of water feature.
Plants are typically the main attraction in
the water garden and create a natural habitat
in which the goldfish and frogs live. Water lilies
cover 50% to 60% of the water surface with their
floating leaves and beautiful flowers, while the
shallow water plants such as Iris or Cattails
emerge around the edges.
The waterfall, which disguises the biological
filter, keeps the water circulated and healthy.
The falling water also helps to oxygenate the
pond in order to maintain healthy fish and a
robust colony of beneficial bacteria that purifies
the water.
The fish do their job in being both beautiful
and beneficial as they keep the pond free of
insects and excess algae as they swim and graze.
The tadpoles consume the organic waste left
by the fish and eat the leaves that settle on the
bottom.
A device known as an Ultraviolet Sterilizer is
also used to eliminate microscopic algae, fungus
and viruses as well as parasites that can attack
the fish. This “option” is the best money you will
spend on your water garden.
If plants are not your thing but big, beautiful
fish are, then a Koi pond is what you want. A
Koi pond is typically larger than a water garden,
much deeper than a water garden, contains no
plants and has a more sophisticated filtration
system. Koi ponds are more expensive than
water gardens, but the reward is truly worth it.
When the beautifully–colored large Koi swim
lazily in circular schools, they relax you. Coming
to the edge of the pond to greet you, the Koi can
feel your footsteps as you approach and bring
a smile to your face. As the fish eat from your
hand, they bring a sense of satisfaction. These
majestic fish, who can live for over 75 years,
know you and will come to greet you every time.
A Koi pond is truly a jewel in the landscape.
Now if neither plants nor fish are desired but
you love the sights and sounds of a waterfall
or stream, then a pondless waterfall is for
you. Imagine a beautiful stream or a majestic
waterfall flowing into a gravel–covered basin.
The water magically disappears into the
decorative gravel only to be recirculated back
to the top of the waterfall or stream. A pondless
waterfall gives you all the desired beauty of a
waterfall or stream with its water flowing over
the rocks without any of the maintenance that
plants or fish bring. A great choice for someone
who either travels often or has a very small space
to accommodate a water feature, pondless
water features are the perfect system for a small,
highly–detailed landscape.
All of these water feature types have their
place and will bring years of enjoyment. Along
with providing personal enjoyment, they will
also attract various birds and other forms of
wildlife to any landscape. For those who desire
more out of their landscape, try a water feature.
