Georgia Hosts the
34th Annual National
Black State Troopers
Coalition Conference
in Atlanta
Georgia hosted the National Black State
Troopers Coalition’s (NBSTC) 34th
Annual Summer Training Conference
& Membership Meeting in Atlanta, on
August 6-11, at the Westin Buckhead
Atlanta. The conference provided both
active and retired state troopers from
various states with personal enrichment
and professional development skills
through training, networking, and
community service with the theme
“Yesterday’s Dream, Today’s Reality,
Tomorrow’s Destiny.” The Georgia
delegation consisted of 52 members from
the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
More than 200 members of the coalition
were welcomed with southern hospitality
by Colonel Mark W. McDonough,
Georgia Department of Public Safety/
Georgia State Patrol, the 52-member
delegation, and other GSP personnel who
taught workshops, provided refreshments
during breaks, and coordinated
activities outside of the hotel, including
transportation to all events.
The conference provided active,
associates and retired members, as well
as their spouses and guests, with the
latest substantive information regarding
and self-development skills. This year’s
Active Shooter, Peer-to-Peer Support,
Recruiting/Hiring, Leadership Training,
and Planning for Retirement. As a part of
the conference events, U.S. Congressman
John Lewis, U.S. Representative, (GA)
5th District, served as keynote speaker
during the opening ceremony and prayer
breakfast, and Justice Harold Melton,
Georgia Supreme Court, served as the
keynote speaker during the dinner banquet
and awards program.
In addition, members participated in a
community service event at the Ronald W.
Bridges Park in Union City, where they
cleaned furniture, rooms, and equipment,
removed old equipment, painted outside
buildings and interior walls, landscaped
and had a chance to talk to a youth
football team. Governor Brian Kemp and
First Lady Marty Kemp hosted a southernstyle
dinner at the Governor’s Mansion.
The objective of NBSTC is to promote
communication between minority
state troopers throughout the United
States and within their own agencies.
The organization works to encourage
minorities to seek employment in law
enforcement, to encourage incumbent
participate in self-improvement programs,
and prepare and compete for promotion
and assignments to special units, so they
can advance and better serve fellow
Although the coalition was created
for Black State Troopers and support
personnel in order to professionalize their
image and to increase their exposure
within Black communities across
the United States, NBSTC is opened
to all law enforcement who want to
make a difference in their surrounding
communities.
