Champion of the Car Wash
by Rebekah King
From Italy to America, from Buffalo to
Pinehurst, from IBM to Champion Car Wash
and Detail Shop, the story changes gears often
while shifting into the ride of a lifetime! The
year was 1920 when the Carubba family of Sicily
came to North America seeking opportunity
and settled in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada before
eventually ending up in Buffalo, NY. With one
hundred years in America, sixty-five years in
the auto body repair business and thirty years
of Champion, the Carubba generations grow
from Anthony to Sam, to Anthony and back to
Sam. Always the inspiration driving life, family
remains tops! Watching his grandfather and
father navigate their journey inspired Anthony
Carubba, owner of Champion Car Wash and
Detail Shop, to fuel his drive.
Growing up with strong, old–school
Italian values, Carubba remembers back to
his childhood days of sweeping the floors in
his father’s auto body shop at age twelve. He
tells, “My father barely got out of high school
and didn’t go to college, yet he grew the family
business from one location to many, many
locations. My father remains my inspiration!” As
it was his job in the early days to get the vehicles
cleaned up and ready for delivery, Carubba’s
heart is drawn to the detail side of the business.
Family owned and operated since the 1950’s,
the Carubba family’s first venture in the South
comes by way of Champion Car Wash & Detail Shop.

Around the World
with Mr. Fred Para
by Rebekah King
Growing up in the wild, wild West, a little boy
born in Aurora, Illinois, on April 17, 1943, caught
the thrill of outdoor living which has grown into
a lifetime of adventure! Whether by foot, boat,
train or plane, he’s traveled the world yet has
chosen, as so many others, to set anchor in our
very own corner of the world that keeps drawing
our hearts home to Moore. Privileged to hear his
incredible story before he’s out the door again,
I meet up for a trip around the world with Mr.
Fred Para. Buckle up!
Raised in a family of 5 siblings, Fred was the
oldest who led the bunch while his family lived
all over the country from Illinois to Minnesota
and Texas. Around airplanes since day one,
Fred traveled often with his dad who was a
businessman, a pilot who flew out of their
backyard. Fred tells, “I got to visit a lot of places
because of my dad; I always wanted adventure!”
Earning a pilot’s license early on, Fred soared
into new heights when he majored in physical
education in college and then joined the Air
Force. Stationed at McGuire Air Force Base
in NJ, Fred served for six years in the Vietnam
War. Upon leaving the service, he worked for an
airline for a couple years before settling into a
career with Mobil Oil that sent him all over the

Past, Present, Future
by Rebekah King
When I say the Gazette saved my life, it’s
true. As we enter the new decade, the new year
of 2020, I look back over my years with the
Pinehurst Gazette and remember the journey.
Privileged to share the amazing stories of our
incredible locals, I recognize my own story is
being written. Beginning with my first issue
#107 to now #137, from 2012 to 2020, my heart,
soul and mind remember each visit to capture
the story, the essence of this gift we call life. I
note the triumphs and tears, the joy and regret,
the ups and downs of the beautiful people who
shared their gift and ultimately became the
greatest gift of all.
Where do I even begin? Going on 30 issues, 8
years. Maybe we should begin at the beginning
with the founding owners who entrusted me Anthony Carubba, owner.
How Can a Generator
Save A Life?
Carolina Power and Generators in Carthage
is proud to provide our customers with peace
of mind in knowing that their generator will
be there to back them up within seconds of a
power outage. Our lives run on electricity and
unfortunately, our modern lifestyles are in evergreater
jeopardy. When there is a power loss, the
realization of how much we depend on power
sets in.

Feeding Horses During the Winter
by Dr. Stephen Duren & Dr. Tania Cubitt
During the winter season, temperatures
typically fall below what is necessary for pasture
grass to grow. Pastures become rapidly depleted
of natural forage, and horses must increasingly
rely on their owners to provide them with a
nutritionally adequate diet. To properly feed
a horse during the winter months several key
factors must be addressed. These factors are
water, fiber and essential nutrients.
Water should always be the first
