McLendon Cabin, Circa 1760
Among the early settlers of Moore County,
Joel McLendon of Irish heritage arrived in
1758, to claim his 200 acres of grant land. Upon
securing the perfect location, McLendon cut
the trees and built his cabin in 1760. He then
built and operated the grist mill in 1767, on
Buck Creek which became known as McLendon
Creek, and the road below became known as
Joel’s Rd. For over 200 years, the one-room log
cabin that he built from the local resources still
stands! The MCHA tells, "The McLendon Cabin is
the oldest house in Moore County on its original
location.” 3361 Mount Carmel Rd, Carthage. ☐
Bookworm Pencil Toppers
Who doesn’t need a pencil topper for
those long homework assignments? The
ones that leave you daydreaming out the
window hoping to escape into the great
outdoors. There’s no getting out of school;
however, you can bring a little fun inside
with these easy peasy pencil toppers.
Materials
• pipe cleaners • pencils • hot glue gun and
glue stick • googly eyes
Instructions
Start by tightly winding the top of the
pipe cleaner into the head of a bookworm.
Once you have your creature, twist
remaining length of the pipe cleaner
acting as the body of the worm around
the pencil.
Using your glue gun, glue a googly
eye onto the face of your bookworm.
Get creative as you use all different
colors of pipe cleaners to form all
different kinds of shapes. You can make
animals, hearts, stars, initials, etc. Make
them your very own and bring a smile to
your school days. ☐
