Aiken has long been known as a popular seasonal residence for equestrians. But many are extending their
stays into the late spring months, or even deciding to sell their homes up North to make Aiken their new
hometown. How did this quaint town capture the hearts of so many? The answer is a combinaon of Aiken’s
love of horses and Southern charm.
At the end of the 19th century, Aiken was known as a “health resort” where Northerners would travel for mild
winters and Charleston residents would escape the oppressive heat and humidity. They foxhunted, played
polo and trained young racehorses. Over me, other riding disciplines such as 3-day evenng, hunter/jumper
and dressage joined in, and today, Aiken has blossomed into a year-round equestrian desnaon.
