Making Waves
Want to make some waves? Now’s your chance
to see some ocean waves inside your home.
Gather supplies:
• A 2–liter bottle with cap
• 1 liter of water
• 1 liter of oil, either mineral or cooking
• Blue food coloring
Let’s get started:
• Fill the 2 liter half full of water.
• Add a few drops of blue food coloring.
• Screw the cap back on the bottle.
• Shake to blend the color.
• Pour in the oil to the very top of the bottle.
• Screw the cap tightly onto the bottle.
•Lay the 2 liter on its side. Roll, tilt, rock the
bottle to create some waves.
Let’s consider:
Did your food coloring and water mix? Did
your oil and water mix? What stays on the top?
The oil or the water? When it rains, have you
ever noticed the car oil in the street puddles?
Science explains such liquids as being either
soluble or insoluble. ☐
The Bryant House, circa 1820
3361 Mount Carmel Rd, Carthage
In the early 19th century, James Bryant bought
the McLendon Cabin, circa 1760, from his father
Michael. In 1820, Michael Bryant built the
Bryant House, named after the family legacy.
Much larger than the neighboring one–room
McLendon Cabin, the 2-story Bryant House, built
of heart pine, features two mantles, chair railings
and hand–made doors. A home of a farmer, the
Bryant house used the McLendon Cabin to serve
as the kitchen. A neat story tells that ladies would
come to make rubbings of the intricate design in
the pine mantle to use for their quilt squares. ☐
