$800K Devoted
to Studying Laurel
Avenue Bridge
BY JULIA MORTIMER
Laurel Avenue’s railroad bridge in Holmdel has long been an
obstacle for trucks. The problematic bridge, with a low vertical
clearance of 12 feet and 5 inches, crosses over Laurel Avenue
which acts as a major connection between the Garden State
Parkway and State Route 35. The thoroughfare not only serves
Holmdel and Middletown residents, but also an abundance of
Monmouth County Freeholder Director Thomas Arnone was
happy to report the county has been awarded $800,000 to conduct
a study of the bridge.
“The purpose of this study is to develop and assess various
alternatives for this grade-separated railroad crossing, and we will
be working closely with the NJ Transit and New Jersey Department
of Transportation for potential improvements,” Arnone said.
The study surrounds the project purpose and need, while
assessing a number of alternatives to identify a preliminary preferred
alternative through coordination with various stakeholders
and the public. The study area will also include the pinch point
at the grade-separated intersection of South Laurel Avenue and
the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line, along with the issue of the
vertical clearance of the bridge.
In March 2016, a truck driver hit the bridge and then was
arrested for a criminal warrant. Two years later, a FedEx truck hit
the bridge. In May 2018, a truck got stuck under the bridge. After
numerous accidents at this location, police installed signs re-
incidents occurred at that location in July 2018, April 2019 and
August 2019.
