Saint John Vianney High School
Faculty and Students
Continue to Thrive in the
Face of the COVID-19 Crisis
The Saint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) faculty and
students continue to thrive academically in the face of the
COVID-19 crisis. Saint John Vianney High School is proud of
marking period of the 2019-20 school year.
Fifteen years ago, the administrative team at Saint John
Vianney High School had the foresight to invest in technology.
Beginning with a one-to-one tablet program, SJVHS has
evolved into a wireless community, with all students and faculty
having the ability to work from their tablets in school and at
home. Last year, the SJVHS community began using the Canvas
learning management system, mirroring the technology used
in colleges and universities.
When the school was mandated to close in March due to
COVID-19, the faculty and students were prepared to continue
learning remotely. Teachers used the Snagit tool to present
lessons while also using the Canvas conferencing tools to have
live, interactive review classes in which all students participate.
Using the school email, live discussion boards, Google
Hangouts, and other technological tools, SJV students and
faculty are always connected to each other.
Paul Scalzo, an SJVHS sophomore, said, “The fact that
SJV has been able to leverage a virtual learning platform for
years has put us at a great advantage from the start of this
crisis. Beyond that, I’ve been amazed at how all of our teachers
have developed new and novel methods to deliver content
to our students. For example, the ability to have group video/
teleconferences with our teachers has helped to preserve a real
classroom environment. I feel like I haven’t missed a step in any
of my course work, and I am grateful to SJV for that.”
The administrative team holds daily meetings using
Google Hangouts and holds weekly department meetings
with each of the academic departments. Communication has
been seamless during the crisis.
Technology issues are being addressed immediately by the
school’s Tech Team. Students who have issues with their tablets
can have them repaired with the no contact program the Tech
Team has created. The goal is to ensure students continue have
the best at-home learning experience and remain Vianney strong.
