Holmdel Responds
to School Closures,
Accelerates
Construction Project
Holmdel Township public schools will continue remote learning
through the end of the current school year, after Gov. Phil Murphy
announced that all schools in the state will remain closed through
the end of the academic year.
Schools Superintendent Robert McGarry indicated that while the
announcement offered some clarity around the current school year, a variety
of issues, including the status of this year’s graduation ceremonies,
remain up in the air. With this new information and with further guidance
expected from the Department of Education, the school district will move
forward to identify alternate plans for the ceremonies that were to be
held in the Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College on June 18.
“We know that whenever our schools do reopen, they will look and
operate quite differently than they did before,” McGarry shared with
parents in a letter.
His communication noted that current guidance from both the
Centers for Disease Control as well as the White House suggest a wide
number of required safety measures that will need to be in place.
“They depict how complicated the process will be, but again, by
practicing perseverance, patience, empathy and creativity, we will continue
to rise to these challenges,” he said.
In the meantime, the Holmdel Board of Education would like to
Holmdel 2020 construction project, which is slated to begin in late June.
“We have been planning for this possibility for several weeks, and
increase the possibility for our entire project to be completed before the
start of school in the fall,” said School Board President Vicky Flynn. “In
Roggy Field sooner than planned.”
closed for safety reasons while construction takes place this summer.
Coincidentally, Murphy’s announcement came during Teacher
Appreciation Week, which presented an excellent opportunity to recognize
the efforts of Holmdel’s teachers during the current pandemic crisis.
“My mother was a public school teacher and
administrator for 30 years, so I have seen
-
ment it takes to excel as an educator,”
said School Board Vice President
Mike Sockol. “The board
appreciates the hard work by
our staff during these challenging
times, and we encourage
parents and students to take
time out this week to show their
appreciation as well.”
