My Clearwater
Fall 53
Adopt Programs
The city of Clearwater initiated the Adopt Programs
This photo was taken pre-pandemic.
to help keep Clearwater clean and green. The
programs rely on dedicated volunteers from business,
industrial, civic, youth and non-profit organizations.
Adopt programs promote community pride by
demonstrating to residents, visitors and potential businesses
that the community is active, energetic and cares about a
clean and safe environment. These programs have proven
to be highly effective in promoting personal responsibility
and changing attitudes regarding the cleanliness of the
community.
The city features three adopt programs, and we’re looking for
volunteers every day:
Adopt-a-Park
Volunteers complete two service projects in their adopted
park during the contracted two years. This can include litter,
debris and invasive plant removal. On occasion, groups will
work with city staff on landscaping and planting projects.
Adopt-a-Street
Volunteers are encouraged to adopt an area of residential
or commercial roadway that is about one mile in length for
litter control. Every other month, volunteers will pick up
litter and place garbage bags under the Adopt-a-Street sign.
Then, volunteers call for pick-up, which is done by the city
of Clearwater’s Solid Waste Department.
Adopt-a-Trail
Volunteers perform
cleanups four times a
year along their section of
their adopted trail site during a
two-year adoption period. Volunteers
remove litter, debris, unwanted vegetation and invasive
plants. Groups assist with light trimming and landscaping
with the guidance of city staff as needed.
All volunteers are provided with the necessary tools, such
as trash bags, garbage pickers, gloves, safety vests (street
volunteers,) and when necessary, a city staff member during
planting and landscaping projects. Groups will be recognized
with a sign bearing their names at the adopted location,
along with publicity on the city’s Parks & Recreation
department website and social media channel. Volunteers
will also be included in any volunteer recognition activities.
