Downtown Clearwater
New Virtual Map Showcases Downtown Clearwater’s
Emerging Arts Scene
One Hundred Years before J. Cole by Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol Illsol at 620 Drew St.
Clearwater’s Community Redevelopment Agency
and Clearwater Arts Alliance have partnered
to create a digital map of art and
placemaking sites in Downtown
Clearwater offering a virtual view
54 MyClearwater
of the city’s vibrant arts scene.
The map gives residents
and visitors options
to enjoy some of
downtown’s unique
and beautiful assets
remotely via a digital
map, or at their own
pace while downtown for an outing,
as the city continues to encourage the
wearing of masks and safe
distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Two dozen murals and creative placemaking
projects make up the virtual map. It breaks
Downtown Clearwater’s art sites into
three categories: murals, public art, such
as sculptures, and placemaking projects,
including signal box art, storm drain
murals, and dumpster murals. There is more
art to come downtown.
The virtual map has photos and locations
of each art site in downtown, as well as
information on the artist and piece itself.
Many of the sites have additional resources such as “makingof
videos” or information on ways you can get involved.
For example, residents
can implement the city’s
placemaking projects in their
own neighborhood.
Interactive content will also
launch throughout the year
with interviews with artists,
additional sites, and behindthe
scenes content, such as
how signal box murals get
made. Residents and visitors
can find the virtual map here:

In addition to the virtual map, it has been
an exciting time for the arts downtown with
the planned expansion of Clearwater’s mural
program this year, and a partnership with
the University of South Florida’s Access 3D
Lab to do an augmented reality installation
at the city Comunidad mural.
The public will soon be able to embark on a
self-guided journey inside the mural, located
at 28 N. Garden Ave., using a smartphone.
