The “Roaring 20’s”
Here We Go Again
by Mark C. Ford CPT
If I recall correctly from history class, the
1920’s started out rather nicely and ended in
calamity. Looks like so far in the 2020’s, we are
doing just the opposite. As we begin this new
decade, there seems to be more questions
than answers. Some things we have no control
over, but there are certain things we can do to
fight the hand that has been dealt us, such
things as the pandemic.
Your health is something that, for the
most part, you do have some control over.
Your health should be taken very seriously. I
would like to recommend that you begin the
new year with a head to toe wellness exam.
Most insurance plans cover the entire cost,
and it only takes a very small part out of your
morning. Many ailments present with no
symptoms until well-entrenched, and the
earlier you find out about them, the better
your chances are of a full recovery. A physical
exam with lab work may identify something
you had no idea existed. Most medical experts
will agree that one key to overcoming an
adverse situation is early detection.
Also, if you are not physically active, then
I recommend you ask your doctor how much
exercise you can safely do to maintain a fairly
high level of fitness. After his OK, it’s time to
get to work. I don’t think anyone really enjoys
being sedentary—getting active is really just
a matter of finding something you enjoy
doing that will be benefit your health as well.
Obviously the chances of your continuing an
activity increases greatly if it is something you
actually look forward to doing.
Unfortunately technology makes
becoming a couch potato quite easy. I received
something from our cable provider the other
day offering 75 more channels. Just what we
need! We only get about 1,000 channels now
and probably don’t watch more than 3 or 4.
You don’t even have to get out of your chair
to change the channel just point the remote.
I should mention, at this point, that if
it’s been quite a while since you have been
exercising, then you should start out slowly.
It is possible to do more damage than good if
your muscles, tendons, ligaments etc. aren’t
ready for the stress they are about to receive.
The Boston Marathon will be around for awhile,
so don’t try to go out and win it just yet.
You might also want to consider finding a
partner with whom you would enjoy working
out. Just knowing someone else is counting
on you can really motivate you, especially
on those days when you really don’t feel very
energetic. Having someone else to talk to as
well as comparing your progress with will
make the whole experience more enjoyable.
Maybe even a friendly little bet as to who can
lose the most weight over the next month, or
who can make it around the block the quickest,
can add a little fun to your endeavors.
As I have mentioned in past articles,
it really is quite easy to set up an in home
workout area. Many people are still somewhat
HEALTH AND FITNESS continued
leery about a gym atmosphere, especially if
they may be predisposed to certain ailments
that could be exasperated by COVID. With
a home gym, you can exercise any time you
wish and save money without the expense of
gym dues. Some clients simply want me to get
them organized with a home gym, and off they go.
Another thing I would like to mention
is the importance of maintaining a healthy
diet. Stressful times surely make the “comfort
foods” look even better. A nice piece of apple
pie before bed sounds delightful, but a bowl
of fresh fruit would taste just as good and
not contain any where near the calories. A
Registered Dietitian (RD) is a great resource
to help you learn ways to prepare healthy
foods. You may be surprised by how fast you
can acquire a taste for things you didn’t think
you would ever like. And when tempted to zip
through the drive thru for some “fast food,”
think “fast fat” because that is exactly what it
will be turning into. Of course, there is nothing
wrong with an occasional treat, but problems
escalate when this type of diet becomes a
staple which is very common today.
So I challenge you to make a commitment
to yourself and your family, that you will do
your best to make the coming decade the best
and healthiest one ever and really make the
20’s ROAR!! ☐
