Around Town
with Benjamin Sykes
Overlooking the 14 acre Powell’s Pond, the
pier is such a treat! Once you leave the pier,
take a walk around the .2 miles of paved trail;
I know you can do it! If you need a break,
there are benches and an awesome picnic
shelter with a grill for parties and picnics.
As the fish
await, boat are
allowed as long
as they don’t
have a motor.
Get out the
paddle or the battery for your boat, and you’ll
be fishing in no time! Take your family, your
friends, yourself... and enjoy some fun at Ray’s
Mill Park. ☐ 837 Saunders Blvd • Aberdeen
Ray’s Mill Park
Right off of busy highway US #1 rests the
sweet solace of Ray’s Mill Park. Once you
pull into the drive, the frenetic pace of life
slips away. I bet the first thing you’ll do is
race down the pier! I know we did!
Andrew Johnson Monument
Andrew Johnson
Dec 29, 1808 - July 31, 1875
Born in Raleigh, NC, Andrew Johnson
never attended school as he was born
into poverty and became apprenticed to a
tailor. Arriving in Carthage for a brief stay,
Johnson continued his skills as a tailor.
Moving to Tennessee as a young man,
he journeyed through the ranks from
mayor to serving in the Senate and House
of Representatives. Elected as Governor
of Tennessee, Johnson governed for four
years.
In 1864, Andrew Johnson joined Abraham
Lincoln’s ticket running as his Vice President.
With a campaign encouraging national unity,
Lincoln and Johnson won! Sworn into office
as VP in 1865, Johnson became President
six weeks later when President Lincoln was
assassinated. What a sad time for America!
Not re-elected to the Presidency, Johnson
became the only former President to return
to serve in the Senate. His service in the
Senate was brief as he was elected in 1875,
and passed away that July 31, 1875.
Serving as the United States President from
April 15, 1865, to March 4, 1869, Andrew
Johnson was our 17th President. ☐ Check
out the monument at the Moore County
Courthouse located in the Carthage circle.
