Venice is Unique
There is something special about walking
down the streets of Venice. The signature look
was created by the New York architectural fi rm
of Walker and Gillette, who supervised and
approved all design work before construction.
To build in Venice, design review requirements
were outlined in all deeds, creating a
community with character. Buildings had to be
constructed in the Northern Italian Renaissance
architectural style. The Venice standards
included the use of sloping roofs with colored
tile and smooth stucco, with regulated awning
colors. Window and door placements were also
regulated. The setting of the building was also
reviewed including setback, orientation, and
relationship to neighboring buildings. All of this
attention to detail created a lovely city, with a
relaxing, European feel.
“Historic downtown Venice is a stunning visual
feast for everyone,” said Morgan. “A recent
beautifi cation project by the City of Venice
includes new landscaping, hanging baskets
of fl owers that adorn the blocks of Miami,
Venice, and Tampa Avenues, tree-lined streets,
expanded sidewalks and safety features ... all
highlight the Spanish revival architectural style
present in the facades of buildings and in the
residential areas. The center of downtown is the
home of Centennial Park and the Intergenerational
Fountain, where people gather for concerts and
events and children play. Beyond the beauty of
downtown, its charm is made only more obvious
by the walkability of the district envisioned in the
1920s by City Planner John Nolen.”
