Jacques Cartier bought his landmark
store on Fifth Avenue in New York
by trading two pearl necklaces
for the property in 1916. A single
strand of white Japanese Akoya
pearls suddenly became the
quintessential accessory to a
woman’s wardrobe. White pearls
are classic, glamorous, versatile,
and indeed timeless. Passed down
from one generation to the next,
a string of pearls can be seen on
most every debutante and socialite
of the day.
The beginning of the 20th century
from 1910 to 1919, brought the fi rst
men’s suits to Gasparilla Island from
England. The departure of the kneelength
suits of this era ushered in the new
trend of three pieces: jackets, trousers and
waistcoat.
