Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s boys’ lacrosse team had the
kind of season it anticipated last year. With an experienced, senior-laden
squad, the Bulldogs expected to be playing for championships. That was
before the pandemic hit, and the season and their careers were over.
To the surprise of many, the returning 2021 Bulldogs more than made
up for the lost 2020 season. Rumson-Fair Haven breezed through the regular
season undefeated and won three championships along the way, including
the B Central Division, Shore Conference Tournament and NJSIAA South
Jersey Group 2 sectional. The Bulldogs won 20 consecutive games before
Moreau, for one, wasn’t surprised by RFH’s success this spring.
“Our seniors played as freshmen and had prominent roles as sophomores,”
Moreau pointed out. “It’s not like we hadn’t any experience.” The
experience that Moreau was pointing to wasn’t just lacrosse experience
because the team looks for athletes who play more than one sport.
“The majority of our players are multi-sport athletes, and they had
their fall and winter seasons and that made a big difference,” he explained.
“The kids didn’t miss a beat.”
Because the Bulldogs look for all-around athletes, it’s not a surprise
that they play aggressively on the pitch. Moreau used a basketball term,
“full court pressure,” to describe Rumson’s approach. They use their athleticism
to attack teams everywhere. The Bulldogs have been played like a
well-oiled machine, overwhelming teams with their depth.
“It’s tough to play us,” Moreau explained. “Our offense is really bal-
successful.”
Rumson has had no fewer than 26 players score a goal this year,
and as Moreau liked to point out, 70 percent of the team’s goals have
been assisted.
Senior attacker Luke Devlin, one of those seniors who played prominent
roles back in 2019, was the team’s top-goal scorer with 58. He also
-
mann deposited 47 goals with 22 assists while sophomore attack Cole
Cashion found the back of net 35 times.
Ball possession is critical in lacrosse, and that’s where the face-off
specialists come in. The Bulldogs have a superb one in senior Tommy
Swain who has won more than 72 percent of his face-offs. He won 239 of
his 330 FOGOs (face off get offs).
As good as the Bulldogs are on offense, they are equally outstanding
on defense led by goalie Ryan Croddick. The senior had 119 saves and was
a real security blanked for the team.
“He’s tremendous,” Moreau said of Croddick. “He has great hands
and has the best stick work of anybody on the team. He’s very aggressive
and starts the transition from defense to offense.”
Junior Jason Halikias, senior Henry Devlin and sophomore Matthew
Bockelmann have been pacing RFH’s defense.

to the limit before edging Wall, 8-7, behind Luke Devlin’s four goals and
memorable season was ended by another undefeated team, the state’s
No. 2 ranked team, Summit. Luke Devlin (three) and Jamin (two) com-
