What is a Florida native plant?
FANN accepts the Florida Native Plant Society
definition of a Florida native plant as one
which, according to the best available historical
and scientific records, occurred naturally
in Florida before the arrival of Europeans and
colonialism. Plants listed here as Florida
natives are identified according to the University
of Florida Institute of Systematic Botany
Atlas of Florida Plants, with a few
exceptions where FANN growers recognize
regional varieties or FANN has chosen to accept
another botanical authority regarding
name and origin. FANN lists certain cultivars
as Florida natives, in accordance with our
Florida Native Cultivar policy, available at
www.FANN.org or by request.
Some native species naturally range across
a large geographic area. Whenever possible,
use plants originating as close as
possible to the final planting site. This practice
can help preserve biodiversity and genetic
diversity. Local ecotypes may establish
and perform better as well. Ask your FANN
grower about local seed collection and propagation
services.
