JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2018-19 19
Now, Jesuit theatre is strengthened by
a presence in the curriculum. And Miller,
like Wegmann and Ball, is thrilled by the
prospects of a new arts center.
“The academic component of our
theatre program has helped to show our
activity; it’s a rich, dynamic discipline
that draws from many skill sets and
attracts many different types of people,”
Miller said. “Theatre is, by its nature, a
collaborative art, and that’s a skill that
translates beyond theatre into the real
world. Designers, technicians, and actors
are all expected to do their own work
independently, but also to do so within
the framework of a collaboration on a
“From a pedagogical standpoint, theatre
is the epitome of rigorous, creative,
group-oriented, hands-on, differentiated
learning – and the end result is a
beautiful, living piece of art for which our
students have labored and of which they
can be proud.”

FALL PLAY: The Jesuit Masque gets
intense in “Judgment at Nuremberg”
The Jesuit Masque’s fall production
of Abby Mann’s “Judgment at
Nuremberg” was a well-received
hit that played to a packed MPR from
November 15-17.
The intense courtroom drama was
based on the war crimes trials that took
place in Nuremberg, Germany after
World War II. It explored the guilt of
Reich, the implications of the trials
for the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi
Party – and Germany’s role in the Cold
War. The script was the basis for the
“This show was unlike any we’ve done
in my time at Jesuit,” said Richard Miller,
Jesuit’s theatre director. “We’ve done
dramas and even courtroom dramas, but
we’ve never done a show that touches
on such an important topic. It’s very
powerful, and our performers recognized
how important it was to get it right.
I think they did that.”
The ensemble cast featured stage
and new Masque actors Adrian
were Hanna Skelly, Amelia Cuttle,
Lauren Jones, and Isabella Ruano of the
Academy of the Holy Names.
