biomimetic dentistry
breaking the dental cycle of destruction
Once you lose tooth structure, whether it
is to decay or to the dentist’s drill, it is
gone forever. The loss of tooth structure
starts the “dental cycle of destruction”, a common
concern with traditional dentistry. For example:
• When a cavity develops, natural tooth structure
is removed and a filling is placed.
• If a filling leaks, bacteria invades, decay forms
under the filling, resulting in more natural
tooth structure being removed and a larger
filling placed.
• Many times large fillings will then weaken the
tooth, resulting in the tooth breaking, with the
tooth then reduced to a stub, and a crown or
cap placed.
• If a crown then becomes compromised, damage
can occur at the tooth nerve, resulting in a root
canal procedure.
• When root canal therapy fails, the tooth is
extracted.
• Teeth adjacent to missing tooth are then
reduced to stubs, in order that a bridge can
be placed.
• Then, when a bridge has decay at the tooth
margin, the decay could eventually damage
the tooth’s nerve… and so the cycle continues.
