(L-R): Juan Gutierrez, Robert Bard, Rosie Gutierrez Karam and
Rick Bela, the four “musketeers.”
As we continue to celebrate LATINA Style Magazine’s 25th Anniversary
this year, I’ve been reflecting on all the people that have made it
possible for us to succeed and continue bringing you our magazine.
This year we lost one of the most important Latinas in my life, one of the most
generous Latinas you would have ever want to know. Rosie Gutierrez Karam
pictured here at her home in Virginia was an incredible human being. She was
generous beyond measure, always ready to turn a bad situation into
an opportunity for success and with a sense of humor that lifted your spirit
even in the most trying times. No one in the history of LATINA Style was more
responsible for our success specially after we lost Anna Maria Arias. With her
husband Juan and our friend Rick Bela, they were part of a very selected group
that begun and empowered the Latino movement in Washington, D.C. They knew
where all the bodies were buried and the truth about all the “fake stories”
that have become legend in the city regarding Latino and Latina leaders and
pioneers. Getting an invitation to their home was a highlight you wouldn’t soon
forget. We will miss her dearly, but her loving spirit will continue to inspire us.
This issue of our magazine has brought a lot of memories of what is like to
fight for your life. The incredible story of Briana Donis and Susana Rabaca is
one that should inspire everyone. In addition, Latinos/as are one of the lowest
donors and this is very difficult for people that are trying to get a bone marrow
transplant. It so happens that bone marrow is very specific depending on your
origin, so the likelihood of getting a match diminishes if you have to look outside
yours. We wish them the very best and we hope that by reading this story it will
inspire you to register with the center. You can make a life-saving difference.
We are also in the mist of the LATINA Style 50 evaluations for the best
companies for Latinas to work for in the United States. I hope your company is
on the list and that you are benefiting from the research that goes into this
selection. You will be able to read all about it on the August edition of our
magazine. If your company has not submitted for evaluation yet, we urge you to
encourage them.
We hope you have a great Summer.
