These photos show how using succulents, cacti and
native plants and trees can enhance the beauty of a
yard ... even without green grass.
A few homeowners in Boca Grande have utilized
this unique landscaping method – take a look
around and you’ll see a few yards with a lack of
grass, diverse succulents and native trees. Near the
root systems are the drip irrigation devices that get
the job done.
Think of all the days you spent in the hot sun
pushing or riding a mower, with mosquitos in your
ears and sweat dripping down your back. Think of
all the mower maintenace you’ve spent so much
money on. With a xeriscape design, there would be
no need to touch a lawn mower again.
If you’re considering using the xeriscape
method, the main thing to remember is to do it
the right way. Even though a green lawn is
pleasing to the eye, a xeriscape design can be just
as interesting ... if not more so.
“All landscaping should have this theory behind
it,” said Riker. “If multiple people decided to start
over with their lawn and create a water-saving
garden, then the environment would see great
benefi ts.”
So maybe it’s time to put down the hose, get rid
of the mower and pick up a succulent: Xeriscaping
is the perfect way to show off your green thumb in
a completely different light.
