of African Americans in Osprey

When most people think about the history of
African-Americans in Sarasota they think of the
historic communities of Overtown, Newtown
and Laurel. Recent research has revealed an
African American heritage in Osprey, dating from
the pioneer days to modern times. This illustrated
presentation will explore what we know and what
we don’t know about the African American legacy
in Osprey. Presented by John McCarthy, Executive
Director, Gulf Coast Heritage Association. Tickets
are $15 for Historic Spanish Point Members, $20
for future members. Tickets can be purchased

Climb the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse

historic Gasparilla Island Lighthouse as volunteer
docents share the fascinating story of this U.S.
legacy! Cost for regular day climbs is $15 per

The Sky Family YMCA will be hosting its third
annual half marathon, The Sand Bar Half Marathon,
which will be run on Manasota Key, one of the
most beautiful places in Florida. Runners will enjoy
a race route without many turns and with much
of the course under tree canopy (a big plus in the
Florida sun).
