FUN AND GAMES
The crown jewel of Downtown St.
Petersburg’s Waterfront District has to
be the St. Pete Pier, which opened in
May 2020. The Pier is the largest waterfront
district in the Southeastern United
States and is certain to bring a wide
range of fun to visitors of all ages.
“It’s the beginning of a new era in
St. Pete,” St. Petersburg Mayor Rick
Kriseman said in a video announcement
of the Pier’s opening. “The future has
arrived in the form of a dynamic, 26-acre
Pier District. Now it’s yours to enjoy.”
is the perfect setting for exercise. The
breathtaking Tampa Bay waters, sea air
and gorgeous view of the city make it a
great place for walking, jogging, skating
and biking. If you like a more organized
-
ness classes like yoga, pilates, hoola and
even a fun class for kids – most at no
charge, unless you feel moved to offer a
donation.
It doesn’t have to be about burning
calories – the Pier is the perfect
place for an easy stroll, perhaps a little
shopping at one of the kiosks at the
marketplace. The sights and offerings
begin the moment you step onto the
approach. As you make your way down
to Pier Point, you’ll pass several interesting
public art pieces. If you’re there at
night, you can see Bending Arc, Janet
Echelman’s huge net sculpture, lit up
like the aurora borealis, undulating in
the tropical winds.
Kids eyes light up when they see the
Glazer Children’s Playground, where
they can play for hours with its brightly
colored slides, swings, climbers and
many more activity areas. The whole
family will enjoy learning about the
marine environment at the Discovery
Bay Watch, which works to keep local
waters protected and restored. Once
the kiddos have burned off some
energy, they’ll be ready to cool off at
Pier Plaza, where they can play in the
splash pad – adults are welcome, too –
and the whole family can enjoy snacks
and ice-cold beverages. Don’t leave
your pup at home – dogs are welcome!
