MY PERSPECTIVE
JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2021-22 43
This simple question has been the
theme of our football team for the
last four years. For our 2022 se-
setbacks and triumphs, heartbreak and
elation. I hoped my consistent badgering
of “How do you want to be remembered?”
would resonate not only for
their time at Jesuit, but the rest of their
lives. Whether it was one more rep in
the weight room, one more play on the
you good enough?” the hunger for more
became infectious throughout the team.
“How do you want to be remembered?”
became a motto the captains and seniors
truly lived by this season.
We have been a good team for many
years. But we needed a signature win to
intervene in your life at crucial times. The
opportunity came by way of accident,
or divine intervention, or however you
want to look at it. I choose the latter.
During the second week of the season,
on two-days notice, we received the
opportunity to play Ft. Lauderdale St.
Thomas Aquinas. As always, Aquinas,
which one ranking service had declared
-
erhouse team, ranked No. 6 nationally
by MaxPreps and already with a Top
10 win. After speaking with their head
coach, I told him I’d call back in an hour.
I conferred with our coaches and then
our captains and got the response I was
hoping for: all agreed without hesitation.
We will always be remembered for that
against one of the nation’s best teams.
It propelled us to another undefeated
regular season and trip to the State
December 3, the feast day of St. Francis
Xavier – whose statue sits right outside
the Tigers’ Den and the Oliva Weight
Room we use every day – we played
Miami Northwestern, a team which
bounced us out of the playoffs two years
ago. Another south Florida juggernaut
destroying everyone they played in the
time we had them at home. This time
would be victorious, decisively, 37-12.
Another signature win that will always
be remembered.
Matt Thompson has a
in the title game.
There may be nothing that compares to
the fanfare and adulation that comes from
was not earned by the players and coaches
alone. Our weekly team Masses and
weekly motivations via text messages to
me (usually after midnight), our teachers
who well-wished the players each week
(yes, the boys are thrilled when you attend
games), the student body (Blue Tide) who
no doubt inspire their brothers, the incredible
support of the parents and alumni – all
are a huge contributors to our success. The
Blue Tide storming out of the breezeway or
running down to the far end zone to watch
The thousands of people who made the
game – these are things we will always
remember.
My hope is that the lessons learned on
game as a Jesuit Tiger, as they stood on the
many things in life that are perfect, but you
you are perfect! That is how you will be
remembered.”
