2022, On the Road to Recovery
Let me begin by wishing all of you a safe and prosperous 2022. It is hard
to accept that as we were beginning to “come into the light” and feeling
optimistic about what awaits us ahead, people in Ukraine are fighting for their
lives. The horror of war is always difficult to imagine, especially when it takes place
far away across the planet. With the advent of mass media and around-the-clock
coverage of this tragedy in the news, we find ourselves immersed in the latest
developments struggling to understand what the people of Ukraine are going through
and hoping that there is a way out of this nightmare. The repercussions of the actions
taking place there today will be felt for a long time, even generations. We hope and pray
that a solution is found soon so Ukrainians can return to a semblance of a “normal”
life. But, of course, it will never be the same.
We begin the 28th year of LATINA Style hoping that you are all well and that you
will be able to join us in our journey for this year’s “On the Road to Recovery.” At LATINA
Style, we have kept our masks on, sanitizing at every opportunity and keeping
distance whenever possible. Hopefully, we will be able to dispense with all the
restrictions soon and start hugging our friends like we know we want.
Throughout the year, we will follow the journeys of Latinas who are succeeding
in their fight for a better future in the magazine, our programs, and our conferences.
It has been a difficult challenge for all of us. Still, the Latinas we are featuring in this
issue, Stephanie Beatriz, Catherine Hernandez-Blades, and Patty Juarez, are among
the strongest and most dedicated leaders representing our community. Learn how
these amazing Latinas keep the needle moving forward. Nothing can stop them!
Finally, COVID-19 seems to be slowing down, but we urge you to keep common
sense alive. On a very sad note, this past week we lost a giant of a champion in our
non-profit foundation, Parents Step Ahead (PSA). Ms. Lorena Green fought until the last
minute for the success of PSA. Her commitment was infectious and we were
honored to have her on our Board. Her advice was always right on the money, and she
had a way of bringing people together that always created a positive synergy in our
outreach. Happy trails Ms. Lenora. We will miss you dearly, but your legacy will live on.
Your life mattered. All of us have lost friends and relatives during this pandemic, but
we owe it to them to not give up and keep our fighting spirit strong. We will prevail.
Let’s also not forget to pray for the Ukrainians. Hopefully we will never have to go
through such an ordeal. God Bless.
