State Theatre
New Jersey
Located in New Brunswick’s Downtown Arts
District, State Theatre New Jersey was built
in 1921 as a grand silent film and vaudeville
palace. PBS featured State Theatre in its
documentary series, Treasures of New Jersey,
in 2018. State Theatre is the largest nonprofit
performing arts center in central New Jersey
and has welcomed more than six million
visitors since its reopening in 1988. Mainstage
programs have featured such high-caliber
artists as Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Kevin
Hart, Melissa Etheridge, Aretha Franklin,
John Leguizamo, Harry Connick, Jr., and
Crosby, Stills & Nash. Program offerings
include Broadway, dance, comedy, concerts,
Performances for Schools, and Sensory-

Zimmerli Art Museum
The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University is
one of the largest and most distinguished universitybased
museums in the country. The permanent
collections include works in all mediums, from
antiquity to the present, with strengths in the Art
of the Americas, Asian Art, European Art, Russian
Art & Soviet Nonconformist Art and Original
Illustrations for Children’s Literature. The Zimmerli
presents dynamic programming and scholarly
publications that reflect its rotating exhibitions.
Recent exhibitions include Everyday Soviet: Soviet
Industrial Design and Nonconformist Art (1959–89);
Guerrilla (And Other) Girls: Art/Activism/Attitude;
Meiji Photographs: A Historic Friendship between
Japan and Rutgers; Reflections: Photographs of
Iconic African Americans by Terrence A. Reese; and
Cats vs. Dogs: Illustrations for Children’s Literature.
The Zimmerli offers a variety of art education
